Over the past few weeks, we have been doing a Chris van Allsburg author study. In class, we read one of his books, The Z was Zapped. The story is set as a play where each letter is involved in some sort of action. That action begins with the same letter. One example would be “The A was in the Avalanche.” This is called an alliteration. As a class project, each student picked a letter, created their own alliteration, and then illustrated that alliteration. Below is our result!
What other alliterations can you come up with?
What did you think about the illustrations in The Z was Zapped?
Dear Mr. Avery,
I thought of another alliteration! We could have done, the A made an amazing alliteration. I loved the pictures because each letter was involved in an action. He made each picture look like there was a stage and an audience. He used shading to make his pictures look detailed.
Sincerely,
Amanda K.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I loved the Z was zapped book and slide show. I had the two letters N and A. My alliteration for N was The n was quietly napping. The one for A was The A was amazing in American Idol. He made his pictures look amazing.

Jenna
Dear Mr. Avery,
I just thought of another alliteration, here it is, The picky P piled on pickles.
Sincerely,
Rebecca A.
@Jenna – You did a great job with your alliterations! I thought the A was amazing in American Idol also. Who knew it had such a great voice!
@Rebecca – That’s a great alliteration Rebecca! I wonder if we could add even more p words to it. The picky, purple painted P patiently piled on perfectly pristine pickles!
@Amanda – One of my favorite things about The Z was Zapped was the way that Chris van Allsburg shaded in his pictures. He did an amazing job without using any color at all!
Dear Mr. Avery’s Class,
I thought your scenes from the Z was Zapped were very creative. Keep up the fantastic work!
Sincerely,
Jacquelyn D.
@Jacquelyn – Thanks! Your class did an amazing job with you alliterations too! What was the one that you came up with?
Dear Mr. Avery’s class,
I thought the pictures were all beautiful! They should all be published!
Sincerely,
Jennifer C.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I came up with 2 alliterations. The pretty and perfect P was picking perfect peaches. Also, the excellent E was exploding from an erupting volcano. I love the illustration because he used shading with his pictures.
Sincerely,
Natalie S

I thought the illustrations in The Z was Zapped were great!
Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Avery
The Z was Zapped was excellent! I like the illustrations. It was all black and white and it had so much detail so it was super hard to draw! The letter that I did was M. The sentence was Mrs. M was married to Mr. M. That was one of my ideas that I came up with. Mr. Avery, Chris Van Allsburg is a very talented and detailed artist!
Sincerely,
Tristan
Dear Mr. Avery,
I really liked how your class did The Z Was Zapped. They put a lot of effort into it and had excellent detail. The letter I did was E and my sentence was the E exploded from electricity. Your class did really well.
Sincerely,
Emily M.

Sincerely,
Mr. Avery
Dear Mr. Avery,
I think the illustrations were great. I love the way that we shaded. I thought of another alliteration, the kind K kissed the keen kitten.
Your student,
Rebecca A.
Dear Mr. Avery,
I thought of another alliteration. The raged R raddled and rumbled while rolling. It also ties into our emotion writings.
Sincerely ,
Marshall
@Rebecca – I love how you used one of our spelling words in that alliteration! That’s a great way to use keen!
@Marshall – That definitely ties into our emotion writing. All of you did a wonderful job with that!
Dear Mr. Avery,
Even though I’m not in your class I have a alliteration for you and it includes one of my class’ spelling words. I don’t know if your class has lesson 7 but it has embrace. My alliteration is Erica was embraced by the easily excited Emily.
Sincerely,
Tristan B.
@Tristan – I’m glad you were able to come up with an alliteration Tristan! It’s great that you were able to use a spelling word in there too. I think it’s wonderful when we can get our spelling words correct for our test. I think it’s even better when we can use them in our writing! Keep up the great work!
Dear Mr. Avery’s Class,
